Strengths

4 reasons to book
  • Exceptional location for sightseeing — A minute's walk from Opera metro, three minutes from the Royal Palace, and a short stroll from Puerta del Sol. Most major attractions are within easy reach, and the surrounding area is packed with dining and shopping options.
  • Very friendly, helpful staff — Guests consistently mention the warm, accommodating team, with one even singling out a staff member by name. The 24-hour reception means someone is always available.
  • Clean, comfortable rooms — Rooms are described as clean and modern, with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free safes. Some rooms have balconies and city views, and towels are changed daily.
  • Good value for the price — With rates from £131 and a central location, guests feel they get more than they pay for. A basic Spanish breakfast is included.

Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • Basic facilities and comfort — As a 2-star hostal, expect no frills. Facilities rating sits at 6.9 and comfort at 7.4 — the lowest categories — so don't expect luxury amenities or premium bedding.
  • Staff speak Spanish only — While staff are friendly and resourceful with gestures and maps, they don't speak English. If you don't speak Spanish, communication may require patience.
  • No pets allowed — The hostal has a strict no-pets policy, which may be a dealbreaker for those traveling with animals.
  • Breakfast is basic — The included Spanish breakfast is simple — croissant, toast, or a small sandwich with coffee. It's fine for a quick start but not a full spread.

“The location was magnificent and the room was exceptionally clean. By the way, the airport was 25 km away. Amazingly friendly and excellent staff, everything was perfect. We booked a guest room with 3 single beds and truly enjoyed it.”

“Excellent location and friendly staff. I stayed in a triple room with ensuite bathroom in the new part of the hostal with 2 friends. The room was very clean and big enough for a weekend stay. Towels, soap, hairdryer, and a free safe were included in the room, and a Spanish breakfast was included with a choice of croissant, toast, small breakfast sandwich with a cup of coffee. A key card was issued for each guest to come and go, and staff were on hand in the small reception 24 hours a day. Brush up on your Spanish, though, as staff only speak Spanish. My friends who didn't speak Spanish managed fine as the staff are so friendly and attempt to use hand gestures, maps, etc., to get the point across. Hostal Luz is in a great location close to the metro and all the central landmarks such as Plaza Mayor.”
